Oscar de la Renta Tennis Club
It may seem seem odd that a tennis club has the same name as a famous designer. Even more so when you find out this tennis club is located in one of the most prestigious golf resorts of the caribbean. So why is it named after Oscar De La Renta? Keep reading, and soon it'll make sense.
It all started when this famous designer, and lover of tennis, decided to build his second home in the Dominican Republic. Oscar was a great participated in the activities within Punta Cana. He organized tennis tournaments that attract famous people from around the world. He also opened a store inside the resort were you can purchase Oscars line of clothes.
The Oscar De La Renta Tennis Center is located inside Punta Cana Resort. The tennis center features 12 tennis courts. Nine are made out of clay, one of har-tru, another of decoturf and one more of natural grass. This makes the Punta Cana Resort the first resort in the Caribbean and Central America with 4 different surfaces meeting the standards of the ITF (International Tennis Federation).
Following in the same tradition started by Oscar De La Renta who brought his friends to play, the tennis club is also known for organizing social tournaments for participants of all skills levels. Don't be surprised if you meet a world class celebrity while inside the club.
If you need to work on your game, the club offers members and visitors private or group tennis lessons for all age groups. The club has three assistant coaches. Felix De Los Santos is the head coach and also the director of the tennis center. He grew into tennis with Oscar de la Renta in Casa de Campo. He became one of the most respected tennis coaches of the Dominican Republic. It was Oscar de la Renta who brought him back to Punta Cana from the United states a couple of years ago to be the director of the Tennis Club.
You can also play against one of the seven ball boys who will participate in a competitive and fun tennis afternoon. If it's too hot outside for you, there are also lights, allowing you to play at night. However, the use of lights is an additional $32.
Individual tennis lessons are $100 per hour. If you purchase 5 lessons, the price drops to $75 per hour.
A two person group lesson is $130 and
a three person group is $140.
To rent a court is $20 per hour.
There is also a proshop in the Tennis Club were you can buy clothes, accessories and tennis rackets. They even offer racket stringing service for $30. If you left your racket at home, you can rent one for $10. The tennis center also features a cafeteria where you can get a light snack and some drinks. Next to the cafeteria is also gym, features modern machines with top level technology.
One of the most iconic aspects of the Tennis Club is the Ballboys Program
Following the instructions of the late Oscar de la Renta, who felt a special love for these kids, these kids come from families with less resources. Within the program these kids learn the game of tennis and the maintenance of the equipment. As they progress they can form part of the budding tennis players, which allows them to earn extra money to help their families. To play with a ballboy costs $10. The only requirements for them are to have good grades, good disposition to learn, and appreciation for tennis.
